Labs for Learning (L4L)

Too often schools lack enough qualified teachers in math and science as well as the instructional materials that can be used to excite and engage students. When children from ethnic groups already severely underrepresented in STEM fields do not have opportunities to explore higher level math and science courses, they are more likely to bypass academic pathways that lead to STEM careers. Labs for Learning (L4L) targets populations underrepresented in STEM careers, first generation college attendees and non-native English speakers who meet the academic qualifications of the six participating school districts.

Labs for Learning(L4L) was developed to give high potential students in grades 7 – 10th opportunities to engage in enriched STEM activities year round. During the summer (one week for rising 7th graders and two weeks for returning participants) students come to the NCSSM campus to attend classes and participate in activities designed to enhance their understanding of science, technology, engineering and mathematics while learning about global warming, climate change and the challenge to develop sustainable solutions.

NCSSM teachers created the curriculum and conduct the learning sessions. Students go on field trips to area museums, laboratories, and colleges. During the school year students participate in educational experiences in their local area via webinars and interactive video conferencing to meet with professionals who work in STEM fields

The curriculum is aligned with grade-level-specific concepts of the N.C. Standard Course of Study for math, science and language arts.

NCSSM is uniquely qualified to administer Labs for Learning. The School has provided summer programs for students of all ages for nearly thirty years. NCSSM’s highly qualified faculty and residential life staff, experience in conducting outreach, well-equipped classrooms, laboratories and dormitory facilities as well as its long established working relationships with area universities and corporations affords the Labs for Learning program to be positioned for enduring success.
