The teaching console in each studio has a "flexcam", which is a small color video camera mounted on a jointed flexible arm. These cameras have proven very versatile in their uses. The "flexcam" is a versatile tool in the teaching studio

(Right) An instructor uses the flexcam to show to her class an image from a textbook. Though the image is small in the textbook, it is large on the TV screen so everyone can see it easily.
students can see clearly what the teacher is doing
Another flexcam (below left) is used here in a chemistry demonstation to provide a close-up view of a chemical reaction . The flexcam provides the students with a large detailed image (below right).
No matter the course material, the "flexcam" finds a use

Cameras like these are also used in the classrooms that receive our distance education courses. The students use them to show their in-class projects, or for the instructor to check their homework assignments, or even to troubleshoot a math problem. The instructor can see what the students are doing wrong on their papers and help them correct mistakes just as if they were physically in the same classroom.
