NCSSM
Distance Education studios are located in the Educational Technology
Complex or "ETC" (photo).
Daily distance education classes for high school courses originate
in each of four studios.
Studio One (photo)
and Studio Two (photo)
are similar in size, and share a dual control room (photo)
with independent control consoles for each studio.
|
Studio Three (photo)
is the largest studio, and has its own control room (photo).
Studio Three also includes an area where students and workshop
participants can view the class and become part of the broadcast
(photo).
Studio Four was designed specifically for H.323 IVC (photo),
and operates via a fourth control room called "ETC Control",
which serves other functions as well.
Each studio utilizes two remotely-controlled cameras (photo),
operated from the control room. Dolly-mounted video cameras
can also be incorporated in any of the studios as needed.
The "ETC Control" (photo)
operates Studio Four, as well as controlling broadcasts from
several other locations in the ETC, including the auditorium,
the Lecture Hall (photo),
two classrooms (photo),
and the "E-Lab" computer lab (photo).
Each of these areas and studios can also be used as receive
sites for classes and conferences.
All control rooms can insert audio into the broadcast from CD-ROM/DVD,
audio cassette or videotape. Graphics, video and animations
can be inserted from DVD, videotape, still store images or from
sources in the studio controlled by the instructor, such as
computer documents, web pages and flexcam video. Each control
room has at its disposal a myriad of special effects as well
(left).
All control rooms use custom programmed Crestron touch screen
panels (right) which provide a high degree of control room and
studio automation. These compact LCD screens allow the studio
manager to remotely control many functions in the control room and the studio:
- automatic
sequential power up/power down of all control panel equipment
- TBC
input selection
- two
robotic cameras (all functions- focus, pan, tilt, zoom)
- VTEL
system functions
- studio
speaker volume
- studio
microphone on/off and volume
- audio
and video input source selection
- VCR

- video
hub routing for the entire Educational Technology Complex
and campus
Classes are recorded on digital video recorders, and selected
sessions are then burned to DVD for archiving. At the same time,
classes are encoded into streaming video using a small laptop
system, and are immediately posted to the web for access by
students who missed class, or who want to review a class. The
streaming video can also be routed to the web in real-time for
live viewing. |
