Latin
I and Latin II
Course Information
This yearlong two semester block course introduces students
to the basic grammar and vocabulary of the Latin language, with
attention paid as well to the history, culture, and beliefs
of the ancient Romans. The second semester course continues
grammar and vocabulary work begun in Latin I with emphasis on
more difficult grammar forms; students should expect to work
hard on sophisticated usages such as the passive voice and participial
phrases. Although some oral Latin will be used, reading and
writing the language will be emphasized. |
Students
should also expect to learn what English inherited from Latin,
and why some modern languages like Spanish, French, Italian
and Portuguese are so similar to Latin. As benefits for studying
Latin, students will improve English vocabulary, communication
skills, problem-solving skills, and be better prepared for the
new SAT with its renewed emphasis on grammar.
Prerequisite: Recommendation by school counselor
for Latin I, for Latin II a C or better in NCSSM Latin I
Recommended weight: Honors |
