In the world of life sciences, things move so quickly that advances made in the field constantly threaten to eclipse our educational system''s ability to keep pace in the classroom. In the rush to keep up, it is African-American, American Indian, and Hispanic students - members of ethnic groups that are already severely underrepresented in the scientific fields - that are most at risk of being left even further behind. In North Carolina, the problem is particularly acute in the state's northeastern region. Labs for Learning (L4L) is a program designed to reach these students.

Labs for Learning program
Labs for Learning is designed to serve high-potential students with enriched science and math experiences during a summer residential program and activities in their home districts and online during the school year. With a focus on increasing access to accelerated high school math and science courses, STEM majors and STEM careers, Labs for Learning targets underrepresented minorities in scientific fields and first generation college attendees.

Students are recommended by school district staff to participate in Labs for Learning. Students recommended for the program have high potential and have demonstrated success in reading, science and mathematics.

The goals of the Labs for Learning initiative are:
  • to provide students with skill sets that prepare them for future success in math and science courses and provide the basis for scientific problem-solving and scientific research skills

  • to encourage interest in the bio-sciences and a career trajectory in a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields

  • to provide support to students to plan a high school plan of study that prepares them for college and success in a STEM career
